I’ve been sick the last two days. Woke up in the middle of the night Sunday night and have been sick since. Went to work half day Monday but had to go home. Been in bed since. This morning I turned on the news and and saw temps for tonight will be 31 degrees. Not good! I just planted the first bed on Sunday. I’m in bed and haven’t had anything to eat in two days. I laid there and came up with a plan.
I asked my daughter and her husband to go to HomeDepot and buy 25 five gallon buckets. Then I had them put the buckets on top of the plants with a brick on top of the buckets. Hopefully this will be enough to protect them from the few hours below freezing. It will also protect the young plants from the hard rain and wind that is expected when the front comes in.
At 7pm the front hit and temps went from 79 to 52 in an hour! It is steadily dropping and should be down to 31 by 4am. It looks like it will be below freezing for 5 hours.
Tomorrow the high is supposed to be 48 and then back to the upper 30’s for tomorrow night. We’ll see how this cold spell effects the plants.
The average last frost here is 26 April. I took a chance and got the plants out early. Maybe it was a mistake. I don’t know. But maybe they will survive and have a small head start. The lumite should keep the soil heat in and help.
Time will tell!
